Writing ethics has a new twist

Oliver Hedgepeth If you’ve seen a TV news program, heard any radio talk show or read a newspaper lately, you know something about artificial intelligence. There are AI systems that any student can download to have AI write their high school or college papers. Just type in the subject and get a nicely done paper. One AI system or tool is called the Generative Pre-trained Transformer, known as ChatGPT. I asked some of my students about the good, the bad and the ugly of such AI systems. Let’s look at the bad. Are you concerned if a person, any person, would have enough thinking ability to create a question for that AI system to answer? Today, each of us can just type a word in the search section of our computer and get an instant set of replies. But for our college students, that’s fine if those students are aware of some bias that may show up in that search. And for college papers, well, you must show the source of any statement or definition you cite. That source is a key factor in making that college paper read like an “A” paper or the professor believing it’s plagiarized and assigning it an “F.” Now, the good. Some students find that use of these AI tools can help extract key information quickly from a variety of sources.
