Writers group helping area poets, storytellers through sessions

A dozen people gathered on the second floor of the Ludington Area Center for the Arts for a recent Ludington Writers meeting. On the second and fourth Tuesday of the month, the Ludington Writers group transforms the solitary act of writing into a team effort. Ludington Writers is a nonprofit that aims to support a community of poets and storytellers. It offers scholarships for continuing education and hosts regular workshops and events. At the March 14 meeting, the Judith Minty Writers Room was filled to capacity for the bi-monthly critique. A drip coffee maker sputtered in the corner as attendees greeted one another, taking seats in a hodgepodge collection of armchairs. As group president, Barry Matthews, called the meeting to order, the room fell silent. But it wouldn’t stay quiet for long. Matthews has been involved with the Ludington Writers for a number of years and said that what makes this group unique is the welcoming atmosphere. We are a friendly group and we tend to have fun,” Matthews said.
