'Star Wars,' Marvel writer hosts comic book crash course

A comic book writer for Star Wars and Marvel returned to his alma mater for a crash course in comic book writing Monday afternoon. “It’s been a while since I’ve been back to campus,” the Bowling Green State University ‘00 alum Marc Sumerak, said. “It’s really rewarding to come full circle and be a legacy of the creative writing department.” Sumerak hosted a presentation breaking down the world of comic books, followed by a book signing and Q&A. During the presentation, he talked about his journey, the excitement that comes along with writing tales of superheroes and how he does it. Sumerak always knew he wanted to write comic books; he said it was in his blood. Even his parents thought he would either be a writer or a puppeteer, he said. When he was younger, he would make his own comics, including illustrations that “showed you why he would be a better writer,” he joked. “Comic books and pop culture were always my thing. I didn’t know you could do it as a job, I just loved it,” Sumerak said. When he started at the university, he originally intended to study education. Halfway through the first semester, he changed his mind and majored in creative writing. “I didn’t want to teach fiction,” Sumerak said. “I wanted to make it.” In the late 1990s, Sumerak would become a co-creator of an online comic book site, Abandoned Warehouse Press, out of his dorm with a friend.
