Peter S. Beagle has announced that he is working on a new tale set within the world of his 1968 novel The Last Unicorn , which served as the basis for the beloved 1982 animated film of the same name. “This week, I'm writing a new ,” Beagle tweeted on Tuesday, Oct. 4, “and returning to the world of The Last Unicorn …” The author's announcement was accompanied by a still from the aforementioned animated feature, which was co-produced by ITC Films. RELATED: A Live-Action The Last Unicorn Film Is in the Works – Plus a Stage Musical Beagle's The Last Unicorn was originally published by Viking Press in 1968, when the author was in his late 20s. Beagle himself penned the for ITC's animated film adaptation, which was directed by Arthur Rankin Jr. and Jules Bass, premiering in theaters on Nov. 19, 1982. Beagle eventually authored Two Hearts , a 2005 novella that serves as a coda to The Last Unicorn . A six-issue comic book adaptation of Beagle's 1968 novel launched from IDW Publishing in 2010, adapted by Peter B. Gillis and illustrated by Renae De Liz. The Last Unicorn has notoriously been the subject of legal issues. Beagle previously lost the rights to the intellectual property to his manager, Connor Cochran, who also had control over Beagle's finances.
