Even after over a quarter of a century of writing, author Cathy Kelly says she never worries about running out of ideas. Her current novel, number 22, The Wedding Party, is out in paperback while she’s ‘nearly finished number 23’ when we chat. “Every day something new pings into my brain,” says Cathy from her home in Wicklow. “I never think I’m going to run out of them because everything is an idea. You know, you pick up the newspaper and you see something and go ‘oh my god, that’s thrilling’. Or you hear that someone and go, ‘wow, that’s just fabulous’. “This book, The Wedding Party, the idea just came to me. It was along the lines of, you’ve got a family and they’re all grown up and the parents are divorced. And what if the parents suddenly say they’re going to get married again, and the family are going, you hated each other, what happened? “It was so much fun,” she continues. “I start with one idea and then you sit down and write it and different stuff comes out. Even though I know roughly what’s going to happen at the end, it can be a bit vague.
