This summer I resolved to find a dirt trail off the Island to run on because I am training for a trail run and writing retreat in September. Trail running is a form of running that takes place in nature. Just before Memorial Day weekend while driving my dog to the Barnegat Animal Clinic, I came across a sign for the Barnegat Branch Trail (BBT). I decided to try it. On my first jog there, I was blown away by its beauty. According to a sign on the trail, construction began in 2007. It is 15.6 miles long and was built along New Jersey’s Central Railroad line, running from Barnegat to Toms River. This well-trodden, but well cared for, mostly gravel trail is surrounded on both sides by trees, offering me lots of shade on my runs. Since I’m someone who had not run for 15 years and then two years ago began trail running, I need steady distractions to keep me motivated and positive. My mind starts saying, “You’re tired, you’re old, you’re thirsty, your knee hurts.” For several runs on the BBT, I keep myself moving through tough moments by enjoying my natural surroundings, especially the trees. Some I recognize and some I don’t, but many are labeled. I pass red cedars and pitch pines, but then I also pass a sassafras, black cherry and magnolia. On various mornings I spy some of God’s creatures – squirrels, toads, a white tail deer and lots of friendly rabbits – scampering around. As I jog along each day, my best distractions are physically right in front of me. I get myself into the routine of running 3 to 4 miles one way and turning around and running that same exact path back.
