Michael Ball has lifted the lid on the writing process behind his debut novel as he revealed he sought his partner’s approval more than anyone else’s. The romantic historical read is set in The Empire Theatre and follows the return of a young soldier from the Great War. Speaking about the “page-turner”, the singer admitted it was his partner, Cathy McGowan, 79, who’s approval mattered the most. He explained: “She’s the person whose approval I want above all others. “I only showed her what I’d written at the end… she looked at me, slightly surprised, and said, ‘You can do this!’ “She called it a page-turner, which is some compliment,” Michael added in an interview with The Mirror. According to the news outlet, the book even features a sweet dedication from Michael to his beloved other half. The message reads: “To Cathy, for keeping the engine running!” Michael explained: “It’s an expression we’ve had all the time we’ve been together. “Before I go on stage, I always say to her, ‘Keep the engine running… we may need to make a quick getaway!’” Michael and Cathy have been together for 30 years, with the music star moving in in 1992.
