This Houston-area poet’s nonprofit helps sick children express themselves through writing

Dede Fox has associated the written word with love since she was a young girl, when her parents would read to her every day. Fox, 72, is a retired teacher and school librarian who began writing poetry later in life to fill a void left by divorce and her children growing up. The Woodlands resident is also Montgomery County’s former poet laureate, serving in the role from 2017 to 2022. The nonprofit is an arts partner with Periwinkle Arts and Medicine Program at Texas Children’s Hospital Cancer and Hematology Center. The nonprofit is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year with a gala April 20 at the Junior League of Houston. The arts and medicine program helps hospitalized children with art and music therapy and writing experiences.
